About this campaign
Kyaka II Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda is home to over 120,000 refugees living across 9 zones and 26 villages. The population is made up mainly of refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (70%), Rwanda (15%), Burundi (10%), and 5% from other countries including South Sudan, Eritrea, and others.
More than 68.5% of the population are young people between the ages of 19 and 40, many of whom are students, school leavers, or youth struggling to build a better future through education.
Despite this large youth population, access to quality education remains one of the biggest challenges in Kyaka II.
The settlement is served by only one main secondary school and a few primary schools, which also serve surrounding host communities. These schools are overcrowded, under-resourced, and lack basic learning facilities such as computers, libraries, stable electricity, and internet access.
As a result, many refugee students are unable to:
1. Access online learning materials
2. Practice with digital tools
3. Research for assignments
4. Download past examination papers
6. Compete effectively with other students from others schools in national examination
5. Develop basic computer skills
This has led to consistently poor academic performance, limiting students’ chances for higher education, scholarships, and employment opportunities.
As a community-based education advocate working closely with youth in Kyaka II, I have personally witnessed many bright and hardworking students fail—not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack access and opportunity.
This campaign seeks to change that.
Our goal is to support 100 refugee exam candidates every year by establishing a Solar-Powered Learning Hub equipped with 10 computers and reliable Wi-Fi internet.
The funds raised will be used to:
a). Purchase 10 refurbished computers
b). Install a solar power system
c). Set up internet connectivity
d). Provide desks, chairs, and a study space
e). Maintain and manage the learning hub
f). Offer basic digital literacy support to students
Through this learning hub, students will be able to:
- Access online lessons and revision materials
- Download past examination papers
- Conduct academic research
- Learn essential computer skills
- Prepare effectively for national examinations and prepared for competition from other students
This project will create a safe, sustainable, and reliable learning environment where refugee students can study with dignity and confidence.
By supporting this campaign, you are not just donating equipment—you are investing in the future of young refugees who are determined to rise above hardship through education.
Together, we can give 100 refugee students every year a real chance to succeed.
Thank you for standing with us.
